Cheam - 290 beat Old Whitgiftians – 194 by 96 runs

Cheam captain, Danny Miller, celebrated his 27th birthday by once again proving his worth, helping Cheam to a convincing victory over Old Whitgiftians with his second hundred of the season.
?xml:namespace>
Miller’s 122, including 15 fours and five sixes, was assisted by opening batsman David Houpapa who scored 68 to set a total of 290 batting first at Croham Road. After having lost the toss and been inserted in to bat, Cheam got off to a slow start with ex Surrey off-spinner, Murtaza Hussain and current Surrey player, Laurie Evans opening the bowling. Adrian Jones was first to fall after being bowled by Evans and was swiftly followed by Chris Salmons who was given out LBW first ball.

Miller and Houpapa then proceeded to keep the score ticking over with the usual hard hitting that we have become accustomed to seeing from these two. Houpapa departed after being adjudged LBW to Hussain leaving Cheam were 144-3. There was no letting up from Miller who relentlessly punished any over pitched deliveries with a swing that Babe Ruth would have been proud of. Miller eventually departed for a 126 ball, 122 as Cheam’s lower order kept the score ticking along until the 60th over. Cheam were all out for 290 off 59.5 overs with Hussain bowling 30 of them and taking five wickets for 92 runs.

Old Whitgiftians reply got off to a good start with their opening batsmen, Laurie Evans and Ali Ayyub putting on a 50 partnership. It was Leigh Harrison who got the break through by sneaking the ball past Evans’ bat to hit his off stump. Ayub followed seven runs later with Harrison managing to bowl him as well. Old Whits then lost regular wickets with Scott following his six wicket haul from last week with figures of 3 for 28 off nine overs.

Miller, Harrison and spinner, Mark Burns, all picked up two wickets each with Paul Cohen picking up the prize wicket of Hussain. 34 from number ten, Luke Fisher, allowed Old Whits to eventually stumble their way up to 194 all out from 52.3 overs.

Cheam’s 2nd XI fared just as well, winning by 85 runs at home to Camberly whilst their 3rd XI could only manage a losing draw.
This win lifted Cheam’s 1st XI to third place in Surrey Championship Division One as they look forward to welcoming fourth placed Brook to Peaches Close next week.
Old Whits version of events;
Cheam skipper Danny Miller celebrated his 27th birthday in style with a dominant innings of 122 at Croham Road on Saturday which was the platform for a comfortable win for the visitors. An understrength OW's were no match for the strong Cheam outfit and the home team's problems were compounded with main strike bowler Jason Lewis being unable to bowl due to injury and Raj Chatwal being hit out of the attack early. Cheam progress may have been delayed had Murtaza Hussain not shelled a caught and bowled chance from the dangerous David Houpapa when the Kiwi was on just 10 going on to make 68. Laurie Evans removed Adrian Jones for 13 and then Chris Salmons first ball to raise OW hopes at 30-2 but thereafter it was left to Murtaza to keep a brake on Cheam with 5-92 from a marathon spell of 29 overs. Cheam were bowled out for 290 in the 60th over with Miller about to declare.
Ali Ayyub and Laurie Evans played sensibly in compiling 54 for the first wicket in 14 overs before an out of sorts Evans was bowled playing round one from Leigh Harrison. Ayyub fell soon after before Miller rang the changes using all 3 of his spinners. Murtaza, Ali Raja and Sean Coughlan all made 20's before OW's lost 3 wickets with the score on 146 and OW's seemed reluctant to try to save the game with Luke Fisher making a carefree 34 from 25 balls at number 10. Millers day was complete with a tidy spell of 2-30 supporting the immaculate Tim Scott who took 3-28.
2nd XI
Round 6 of the season saw Camberley visit the home of cricket.
They were keen that's for sure, fielding practice at 11:45 for 45 minutes certainly showed they meant business. Smokey arrived sober for a change, and with Kasar travelling for a month all 11 players were on time. Oh no, wait... Marcus was stuck on a train in Carshalton!
Camberley who wanted to get home in time to watch the over rated England play and disappoint in their first world cup qualifier were keen to get started. They won the toss and became the first team in Surrey Championship cricket history to elect to bowl at Peaches Close!
The early loss of Perkins put Cheam on the back foot, but Marcus and Peter Crouch, I mean Rob Hendry steadied the ship putting on 90 between them and seeing Cheam though to drinks. 3 balls later Crouchy had a moment, top edging a sweep to short fine leg. In comes the captain. Marcus losses his wicket 5 balls later clipping the bowler to short mid wicket. Suddenly 100-1 became 101-3 in the space of 8 balls. In came Callum, tired after his long shift at Super Fish last night. He even had a chip in his pocket which he ate on the way out. He mumbled something to Circus before taking guard. Circus started off well, looking to carry on where Marcus had left off. Then when trying to hit one over mid on, turned his wrist over and hit it straight to deep mid wicket. who juggled it twice, before falling backwards and taking the catch after the ball landed in his mid-drift.
Then it was the the Callum Hope show. After getting himself set by hitting every fielder out there, he went arial. Boundaries galore to bring up his maiden 2nd XI 50. He shared the moment with Machine in the middle, can you think of a more experienced cricketer to have at the other end. Callum was eventually out for 57, great knock. To wrap up the innings, Machine smashed a few, Blackman nearly hit one of their fielders and Mr Incredible (Pricey) missed a straight one. Cheam 229-9 declared off 52 over's.
Blackman got the early break through in the 3rd over, finding the outside edge and Circus diving forward at 1st slip took the catch. Blackman being his friendly self waved goodbye to the batsman and Cheam were up and running. 3 over's later JP finds the outside edge of their number 2 and Callum takes an unconvincing catch. Blackman and JP took one more each before the spinners came on. JP could have had a third but dropped a tough chance off his own bowling. Diving to his right, the ball went in, then out again. JP was on the floor, everyone was concerned, not about the dropped catch, just how many of us it would take to get him back to his feet!! There is now a ridge if you bowl down the hill too!!!
Robbie Hendry came into the attack and got a wicket in his first over finding the edge and Circus taking the catch. Crouchy took another 5 to wrap up the game and finish with figures of 6-35. Funky please don't take him back!!!! Camberley all out 141.
Man of the Match this week - Callum Hope - 57 runs, 4 catches and a stumping, not a bad days work!!!
Next up Warlingham away.
